punches

One of the many great things about John Sumser is that he calls it as he sees it and he doesn't pull any punches.

Punches

I first met with John back in March during our pilot phase and he wrote after our meeting:  "Jobster provides a solid alternative to standard recruitment advertising. This is a high quality sourcing toolset.”

Today John chimes in with a new spin on Jobster's recent acquisition of WorkZoo.

My response:  bravo!  We intend to engage the industry in an ongoing dialog around better ways to reach and qualify top candidates.  We're absolutely thrilled that such a dialog is underway.  Any time we have folks in the industry reading about and commenting on alternative ways to source great talent -- beyond the old 'post and pray' models, that's a good thing.

Here are some specific comments in response to some of the questions John raises:

  1. We've said from the very start that Jobster is about reaching the right person with the right job at the right time through a variety of targeted means.  That includes referrals.  That includes targeting via e-mails, groups and affiliations, on blogs, websites, search, RSS, and other means.  That includes lots of other stuff in deep development in jobster labs...
  2. We didn't purchase WorkZoo to just rebrand it Jobster and keep it the same.  Rather, we purchased WorkZoo to include it in a new and uniquely differentiated service offering.  The WorkZoo acquisition is part of a concerted strategy to combine many compelling pieces into an integrated solution which helps employers better target and connect with great candidates -- while helping the best candidates stand out from the pack and get noticed....and ultimately get hired.
  3. We are not going to compete with the big boards.  We respect them and will continue to drive traffic to them.
  4. I use my blog to discuss what’s going on in the industry, much like many others do.  With regards to the Monster article in the Washington Post noted immediately below, I thought this was an interesting article that speaks to employers' general problems about getting “resume spam.”
  5. From the very start, Jobster has always said that we don’t have all the answers.  We’re continually learning and evolving based on customer needs. In speeches all around the country, the first thing I say is always:  "guess what?  we don't have all the answers.  We have a strong hunch and a theory that the industry needs to get more targeted and that online recruiting solutions in general need to prove more effectiveness .. but we don't have all the answers.  BUT, if you engage with us and challenge us, we promise to listen and learn.  Fixing online recruiting -- and yes, it does need some fixing -- will not happen over night.  But it can happen if we all listen to the pain points and learn from them."
  6. Jobster has a proven business model and more than 100 companies are actively using the Jobster service with great success.  Boeing.  T-Mobile.  Microsoft.  Bearing Point.  Boston Scientific.  Millennium Pharmaceuticals.  Veritude.  Disney.  just to name a few...  We're building success one customer at a time. And, we're actually very proud of the fact that we don't over hype customer wins and their hires -- we let our customers' success speak for itself.  We've had more than 50 new companies choose jobster in the past 4 weeks because either they or a company they know well experienced success through the service.
  7. Bringing about change ain't easy, ain't always clear to everyone, and ain't always fast.  We've marching to a specific strategy with a step by step plan.  WorkZoo is just a piece ... much much more to come.  Enabling employers to get the right job in front of the right person at the right time will not happen over night ... step by step.  As a former mentor of mine used to say:  "long term winners filter out the noise and just play their game..."  That's what we're gonna keep on keeping on doing.
  8. Jobster v1.5 launches next week.  Will enable employers to build large talent networks and proactively promote jobs to great people in new ways never before possible.  2.0 on the way.  All driven directly from customer input.

I was asked today by one of our customers if commentary like this bothers me.  Nah ... it helps us get better.  Keep it coming.  Please. :)

The resume twilight zone is unfortunately not unusual as many jobs boards take resumes and return feedback to the job seeker that the resume has been submitted to the employer, but I have personally validated with many job boards that this feedback is often just that feedback and sometimes 50% of submissions I have presented never find thier way to the employer.

Boards include:
Monster
DICE
Yahoo Hotjobs
and others

Once you submit an online resume through a job board you must followup with personnel in the hiring company to validate that they received the resume, but use your time wisely and focus on the positions that you feel the most potential with.
