the following post is by louise fletcher as part of the recruiting blog swap.
I am an introvert. Since I am also opinionated and certain
that the world deserves the benefit of my wisdom on most matters, I force
myself to overcome my hermit-like tendencies most of the time. But life in corporate America was always a struggle for me (an introverted HR executive? Not a good fit!) and
I was physically and emotionally drained at the end of every day. I am so much
happier now that a large portion of my job involves working alone.
But if I found business meetings tiring, that was nothing
compared to those times I had to look
for a job, a process which demanded 100% extravert behavior. I could psych
myself up for interviews in the same way I always psyched myself up for a busy
day of meetings. But I would break out in a cold sweat at the thought of
introducing myself to strangers, which meant I missed all kinds of
opportunities to build my network. When everyone else was getting to know lots
of people at conferences or training sessions, I would usually be recharging my
batteries with a solitary walk, or chatting with the one or two people I
already knew. And the thought of making calls to complete strangers in search
of an introduction? Just no!
Maybe – finally - we really can inherit the earth.
